Mid Sussex Times June 14 1985

The new style village sign will be unveiled on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.

The original sign, which was erected in 1977 to mark Jubilee day, has been missing from its site on the village green for almost a year.

The new sign was painted by Mr James Forsyth, of Cuckfield Road, Ansty, who also painted the original one. Mr Ray Heavens, of Ansty, has repaired and replaced the oak posts and surrounds for the sign.

The money for the work was provided by Cuckfield rural parish council.

Located at the crossroads which the village is built around. The current sign was commissioned by the local council in 2011 to replace an older one which had faded badly painted by dramatist James Forsyth in the 1970s who lived in the village until his death in 2005. The original frame remains whilst the design includes the green cross of the local landowning family who resided at Legh Manor whilst the road represents the highway the village was built around and the hart for its location next to the former Cuckfield deer park.
