1936: What are Town Planners contemplating for our beautiful town?

Mid Sussex Times - Tuesday 21 July 1936

TOWN PLANNING: CUCKFIELD,

To the Editor of The Mid-Sussex Times.

Dear Sir, —Are the residents of Cuckfield and the many other residents in our district who love the beauties of Cuckfield fully alive to the drastic alterations and demolitions which are contemplated by the East Sussex County Council in connection with main roads through Cuckfield?

It is alleged that some of the old houses to be pulled down are in need of demolition, but as one having some knowledge on these matters, I submit that the cottages can be put into habitable and sanitary condition at reasonable cost and the appearance of the area preserved.

I wonder if the cedar is affected. Is it wise to concentrate the traffic of two important main roads in the centre of Cuckfield ? Is the entire alteration of the appearance of Cuckfield real town planning?

Yours faithfully.

Haywards Heath.
