KNIGHT

After a long period of failing health the death occurred late on Sunday of Mr Stephen Knight, Brocketts Whiteman’s Green.

Both his father and grandfather bore the same name, and the latter inaugurated the building business of the family in 1807. Mr Knight was 86. He built the Queen’s Hall and public library, and the Rural District Offices in Haywards Heath.

He was connected with the old Local Board and Urban Council for over forty years, and served three periods as Chairman of the latter body. For eleven years he was a member of Cuckfield Rural District Council and the old Board of Guardians and he also served on the Mid Sussex Rural Parish Council.

Shortly after the war he was made a magistrate for the County, and sat on the Haywards Heath Bench. In his younger days Mr Knight was a member of the 2nd Volunteer Regiment, and when he retired with the rank of sergeant after 22 years, he was awarded the Volunteer Long Service Medal.

Mr Knight retired from business when the firm became a limited liability company shortly before the war. The present directors are his two sons, Messrs SH and W Knight. There are seven daughters. The funeral is taking place this Thursday afternoon at the Parish Church .
