1914: Signals technology tested in Cuckfield

This photograph from the Imperial War Museum shows Signal Section of the 2/8th Battalion, London Regiment (Post Office Rifles) who are practicing transmitting and receiving messages during training at Cuckfield, Sussex. The transmitting instrument was invented by Scout JR Riordan, sitting in the back row, right of photo.


Would it have been quicker for the guy on the right to talk to the one on the left, we might wonder - or are they transmitting further afield?


This looks like a location just 100 yards south of Whiteman's Green Recreation Ground.
