Mr Croucher, surveyor to the Cuckfield Union Council, is lying in the Haywards Heath Cottage Hospital as the result of being overcome with gas fumes while testing drains at Cuckfield. Mr H Knight, who, while at the top of a manhole, tried to get Mr Croucher out of the inspection chamber, was also overcome. The two men were rescued by a Mr J Patendon, and - recovered after being treated with artificial respiration.
