At the Brighton Borough Bench on Tuesday, James Mitchell (31) was charged with begging. PC
Cornford, on the previous afternoon, saw the prisoner go down the areas of several houses in Prestonville Terrace.
He took him back to the last one, and the prisoner admitted that he had been begging, and expressed his determination to continue begging even if the Magistrate sent him to prison. He then took him into custody. The prisoner stated that he was a native of Cuckfield, and he only begged as he was hard pressed.
Sentenced to seven days' hard labour.
