Updated: Dec 3, 2023

Chichester Express and West Sussex Journal - Tuesday 30 January 1872

January 30, 1872 CUCKFIELD, SUSPICIOUS.

— Mary Lewis, middle-aged woman, who, perhaps, has a better right to the name Woolcott, was charged with hawking without a license endorsed. She seems, by Superintendent Pocock’s statement to visit gentlemen's houses as a children's and Iadies’ hairdresser, and disposes of false hair, washes, etc., to the servants.

Pedlar's certificate from 1870 (commons)

She had a pedlar's license endorsed at Croydon and Tunbridge Wells and P.C Berry said that he had warned her take it to Mr. Pocock, but as she had not done so took her into custody.— Remanded.
