1828: Experienced carriage driver tragically killed at Ansty

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

Star (London) - Thursday 06 November 1828

Sunday, the Blue Van, in its progress to London, was overturned in its descent down Ansty-hill, this side of Cuckfield. John Purser, who has driven the van for fourteen years, jumped from his seat; we regret to add, the van fell upon him, and he was killed on the spot; the guard escaped without injury.

Assistance was quickly procured, the van righted, and proceeded on its journey. The remains of the unfortunate Purser were removed to Cuckfield, where an inquest was held upon them yesterday, and a verdict of "Accidental death " returned.
